Reflecting on the 2024 NFL Draft: A Closer Look at the Seahawks’ Choices
As an observer of the Seattle Seahawks’ draft process, I must admit that I refrained from providing an instant reaction commentary during the 2024 NFL Draft. My intention was to avoid being hypercritical, particularly in MacD’s first solo run as a head coach. However, after following John Schneider’s tenure for over a decade, it became evident that this year’s draft did little to dispel any doubts about Pete Carroll’s influence on John.
John Schneider’s Dominance Shines Through
If there were ever any questions about Pete Carroll’s role in the draft process, John made it abundantly clear who wore the pants in that marriage. As is often the case in many partnerships, Pete shouldered all the blame for anything that didn’t pan out. I say this because upon examining the Seahawks’ 2024 NFL Draft selections, it becomes apparent that it bears a striking resemblance to previous drafts under Pete and John’s leadership.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not suggesting that the draft choices lack promise. However, it is hard to ignore the fact that John’s fingerprints are all over this draft class. Even the undrafted free agent signings seem to align with John’s preferences. While it remains to be seen how everything will pan out, it raises the question of who will shoulder the blame if things go awry.
Adding Depth and Potential with Rookie Acquisitions
Initially, I believed that the Seahawks had adequately addressed their needs through free agency and trades before the draft. Therefore, I assumed that the rookies would primarily serve as depth additions. However, upon closer inspection, two acquisitions stood out among the undrafted free agents.
The most intriguing additions came in the form of two quarterbacks, two running backs, and a tight end. It’s worth noting that this year’s undrafted free agent pool showcased several compelling prospects. With these new additions, John Schneider certainly has his work cut out for him, particularly in unloading Geno Smith, a player he has never held in high regard. It is possible that this disagreement over Smith’s potential may have played a role in Pete Carroll’s departure.
One quarterback prospect, Sam Howell, who was acquired via a trade deal negotiated with the Washington Commanders NFL Team, has caught the attention of most objective football critics. Many believe that with the right coaching, Howell could be “the guy” the Seahawks have been searching for. It is interesting to contrast this with John’s previous attempts to convince everyone that Geno Smith was the answer, a notion that most people knew was far from the truth.
Another possible diamond in the rough undrafted quarterback to keep an eye on is Chevan Cordeiro. Recently dubbed a quarterback with immense potential, Cordeiro adds further intrigue to the Seahawks’ quarterback situation.
The Road Ahead: Promising Prospects and Uncertain Outcomes
As we move forward, it is clear that John Schneider has his work cut out for him. The draft choices and undrafted free agent signings suggest a continuation of the Seahawks’ established approach. While this may be promising in some aspects, it also raises questions about the potential blame game that may ensue if things don’t go as planned.
Ultimately, only time will tell how these draft picks and undrafted free agents will perform on the field. As fans, we can only hope that the decisions made by John Schneider and the Seahawks’ front office will lead to success. Until then, we eagerly await the start of the season and the opportunity to witness these new additions in action.
